Why Your Competitor Shows Up on Google Maps and You Don't

A plain-English guide to ranking your Google Business Profile (GMB) in 2026: what Google actually looks at, what quietly stopped working, and the exact steps to take this month. No jargon. No agency fluff.

By Srija RPublished 26 October 202615 min read

It's 9:15 PM on a Tuesday. Priya's 6-year-old has a toothache that won't stop. She picks up her phone and types "dentist near me".

Google shows her three clinics. She reads a couple of reviews, taps Call on the second one, and books for 10 AM tomorrow.

Your clinic is 800 metres from her house. You have better equipment, a gentler doctor, and fair prices.

She never saw you.

This happens to local businesses every single day: clinics, salons, restaurants, coaching centres, interior designers, pest control, laundry. Not because they're worse, but because Google doesn't understand them as well as it understands their competitor.

The top 3 spots on Google Maps aren't won by the best business. They're won by the business Google trusts and understands the most.

The good news: most of what decides those top three spots is in your control, and a lot of it takes less than an hour to fix. This guide shows you what Google looks at in 2026, in plain language, with something you can act on in every section.

If you only read one box, read this

  1. Your business category matters more than anything else you can change.
  2. Being open when people search now directly affects your position. Closed means you drop.
  3. Fresh reviews beat old reviews. 4 new reviews every week beat 100 reviews from 2022.
  4. The "Services" section on your profile is now a ranking signal, and most businesses leave it empty.
  5. Being listed on JustDial, Practo, Bing and other trusted sites helps you show up in AI answers like Gemini and ChatGPT.

Where this comes from: the most respected study in local search is Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors 2026. 47 of the world's leading local SEO practitioners scored 187 individual signals on how much each affects Google Maps rankings, regular search rankings, customer conversions and AI search visibility. I've translated it for business owners and added what I see running local SEO for Chennai businesses.

Before we start

A 60-second jargon buster

You'll hear these words from every agency. Here's what they actually mean:

GMB / GBPGoogle My Business was renamed Google Business Profile in 2021. Same thing: your free listing on Google Search and Maps.
Map PackThe box of 3 businesses with a map that appears for searches like "salon near me". This is where the calls come from.
NAPName, Address, Phone. It must be identical everywhere: Google, website, JustDial, Facebook.
CitationAny place online that lists your business name and details: JustDial, Sulekha, Practo, IndiaMART, Bing Places.
Primary categoryThe one main label you choose for your business on Google, like "Dermatologist" or "Beauty Salon".
Geo-gridA map-style ranking report showing where you rank from dozens of points around your area, not just from your shop.

The big picture

How Google decides who gets the top 3 spots

Google has said publicly that local results are based on just three things. Think of Google as a helpful neighbour recommending a shop. Before naming anyone, it asks itself three questions:

Relevance"Does this business actually do what the person asked for?"Driven by your category, name, services, reviews and website.
Distance"Is it close enough to be useful?"Driven by your verified address. You can't fake it, but you can plan around it.
Prominence"Do people know and trust this business?"Driven by reviews, mentions on other sites, links and how often people search your name.

Every tip below feeds one of these three. In the 2026 survey, experts estimated that your Google profile itself accounts for roughly a third of what decides Map Pack rankings, and reviews about a fifth. Reviews and customer behaviour (clicks, calls, direction requests) were the two areas that grew most in importance since the 2023 study.

The scoreboard

The top 10 things Google looks at in 2026

These are the 10 highest-scoring factors for Google Maps rankings, out of 187, with what each one means for your business:

#Ranking factorIn plain words
1Primary business categoryThe main label you chose on Google.
2Distance from the searcherHow close your shop is to the person searching.
3Keywords in business nameWhether your real name contains what people search for.
4Address in the searched city"Salon in Porur" favours salons physically in Porur.
5Open at time of searchNEWClosed right now? You get pushed down.
6High star rating (4–5★)Quality of reviews, not just how many.
7Address shown on profileNEWShops that display their address tend to rank better.
8Additional categoriesSecondary labels for your other real services.
9Number of written Google reviewsReviews with words beat star-only ratings.
10Correct map pinIs your pin on your actual building?

Just outside the top 10: how recent your reviews are (#11), how often people click your listing (#13), a steady flow of reviews instead of bursts (#14), your website's name/address/phone matching Google (#15) and how complete your profile is (#16).

The masterclass

8 lessons every business owner should understand

Each lesson explains what the factor is, why Google cares, a real-world example, and what to do today.

1
Relevance · #1 factor

Your category is your signboard to Google

What it is

When you set up your profile, you picked a primary category. It's the single most powerful thing you control. If a person on the road can't tell what your shop does, they walk past. Google is the same.

Why Google cares

It's Google's fastest way to decide whether you're even eligible to appear for a search. Pick "Medical Clinic" and Google may not show you for "skin specialist near me", however good your reviews are.

Example: A clinic offering acne, laser and hair treatments listed as "Medical Clinic" competes with every general practitioner in the city. Switch the primary to "Dermatologist" and add "Laser Hair Removal Service" as secondary, and Google now knows exactly which searches to show it for.
Do this today (10 minutes):
  • Search your main service + area on Google Maps and note the top 3 businesses.
  • Install the free GMB Everywhere Chrome extension to see their categories.
  • Choose the most specific primary category that matches your main income, then add secondary categories only for services you genuinely provide.
2
Distance · #2 factor

You can't move your shop, so make sure Google knows exactly where it is

What it is

Google mostly shows businesses close to the person searching. That's why your ranking looks great when you search from your shop and disappointing when a customer searches from 3 km away.

The mistake I see constantly

The map pin sits on the wrong building, the main road instead of the lane, or an old address after a move. Google then thinks you're somewhere you're not, and the customers right next to you don't see you.

Example: A physiotherapy centre with two branches had its second branch pin dropped near the first one. Each branch was competing with itself, and neither ranked well in its own neighbourhood.
Do this today:
  • Open your listing on Google Maps, zoom in to street level, and check the pin is exactly on your premises. If not, edit it.
  • Stop judging ranking by searching from your own phone in your own shop. Ask for a geo-grid report (tools like Local Falcon, Localo or Whitespark show this), which reveals where you're visible and where you're invisible.
  • To reach nearby areas, create a page on your website for each area you serve. That's how you win searches beyond your Maps radius.
3
Relevance · #3 factor

Your business name: powerful, and dangerous to fake

What it is

If your business name contains the service people search for ("Sri Murugan Dental Clinic"), Google gives you a boost. That's why you see listings like "Best Salon Chennai | Bridal Makeup | Hair Spa | Facial".

Why you shouldn't copy them

Adding words that aren't on your signboard breaks Google's rules. Competitors report it, and Google can rename your listing or suspend it entirely, overnight, with all your reviews hidden. It's a short-term trick with a very expensive downside.

Do this:
  • Make your Google name match your signboard, GST registration and website exactly.
  • If you're opening a new branch or rebranding, consider a name that naturally includes your service. That's a legitimate, permanent advantage.
  • If a competitor is stuffing keywords, tap "Suggest an edit" on their Maps listing. Removing spam listings is itself a top-20 ranking factor.
4
New in 2026 · #5 factor

Closed = invisible. Your hours now affect your ranking

What it is

This is the biggest new discovery in local search. Google prefers to show businesses that are open right now. Experts have watched listings slip in the last hour before closing time and drop sharply once closed, with open competitors taking their place.

Why it matters so much in India

A huge amount of searching happens after work, between 8 PM and 11 PM: booking tomorrow's salon slot, finding a clinic, ordering food. If you close at 8, you're losing those searches, and the competitor open till 10 is collecting them.

Example: Back to Priya at 9:15 PM. Every clinic in her top 3 showed as open. The clinic closed at 8 PM didn't stand a chance, regardless of its quality.
Do this:
  • Make sure your hours are accurate, and add special hours for Diwali, Pongal and other holidays.
  • If you genuinely take appointment calls late (a receptionist, an answering service), appointment-based businesses can reflect that in their hours.
  • Never list fake hours for a walk-in shop. It's against Google's rules, and a customer facing a locked shutter becomes a 1-star review.
5
Prominence · ~20% of ranking weight

Reviews are digital word-of-mouth, and freshness matters most

What Google measures

Four things: your star rating, how many written reviews you have, how recent they are, and whether they arrive steadily. Think of it like a restaurant. A queue outside today tells you more than a newspaper article from 2021.

Local SEO researcher Joy Hawkins (Sterling Sky) has observed rankings slipping when businesses go six to eight weeks without a new review.

Example: Business A has 400 reviews but none in four months. Business B has 120 reviews and gets 4–5 new ones every week. In many local searches, B now has the edge, because Google reads B as active and trusted today.
Build a review routine, not a one-time campaign:
  • Download Google's official review link and QR code from your profile dashboard. Put the QR at reception, the billing counter and on bills.
  • Send the review link on WhatsApp within 2 hours of the visit, while the experience is fresh.
  • Gently ask customers to mention what they came for and where ("my bridal makeup at their Valasaravakkam studio"). Keywords in reviews help, but never give them a script to copy.
  • Encourage photos with reviews. Photo reviews are a new ranking factor.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad. Google now checks owner replies before publishing, so yours may take a little time to appear.
Please don't buy reviews or offer discounts for them. Google has sharply stepped up fake-review detection. It is deleting batches of reviews (including genuine 5-star ones caught in the sweep), and caught businesses can be blocked from receiving new reviews for months, with a public warning shown on their profile. Asking only happy customers ("review gating") is also against policy.
6
The hidden opportunity · #22 factor

The "Services" section most businesses ignore

What it is

Inside your Google profile there's a Services section where you list what you offer. In 2023, experts thought it barely mattered. Then two separate research teams tested it and found it does affect rankings. In the 2026 study, Google's suggested services jumped to #22, and keywords in services climbed 75 places.

Why this is your opportunity

When I audit local businesses in Chennai, this section is empty far more often than not. Filling it properly is one of the quickest legitimate advantages you can get over competitors.

Do this today (20 minutes):
  • Open Edit profile → Services. Tick every service Google suggests that you actually offer.
  • Add your own custom services with clear names customers would search: "Root Canal Treatment", "Kids Haircut", "Home Physiotherapy Visit", "Sofa Dry Cleaning".
  • Write a short, honest 1–2 line description for each. Don't stuff keywords.
7
Relevance + Prominence

Your website is the proof behind your profile

What it is

Your Google profile makes claims ("I'm a dermatologist in Anna Nagar"). Your website is where Google checks them. A profile with a strong website behind it is far more believable.

The five website checks that matter most for Maps

  1. Same name, address and phone as your Google profile, spelled identically.
  2. Service + area in the page title and main heading, e.g. "Skin Clinic in Anna Nagar West | Acne, Laser & Hair Treatments".
  3. One page per main service. This is the #1 factor for regular Google search rankings.
  4. Local details: neighbourhoods, landmarks, the nearest metro station, areas you serve.
  5. LocalBusiness schema, a small piece of hidden code that tells Google and AI tools your name, address, hours and links in a machine-readable format. Your web developer can add it in under an hour.
No website? You can still rank, but you're competing with one hand tied. Several top-25 factors depend on the website your profile links to.
8
Behaviour signals · rising

Give people a reason to engage with your profile

What it is

Google watches how people interact with your listing: do they click on it, scroll your photos, read reviews, call, ask for directions? How often people click your listing in Maps results is now the #13 factor. A profile people engage with tells Google "this is a good answer".

Do this every month:
  • Upload 4–6 real photos: your team, your work, your premises, and your signboard from the road so people can find you.
  • Add a short 15–30 second video: a quick walkthrough or a team introduction.
  • Avoid stock images and AI-generated photos. Experts now flag both as negatives.

What changed on Google Business Profile (2024–2026)

If you set up your profile a few years ago and haven't touched it since, some of it no longer works the way you think:

What changedWhenWhat it means for you
Google's chat feature shut downJuly 2024Add your WhatsApp number instead. Google added WhatsApp integration as the replacement, and it's perfect for Indian customers.
Public Q&A section removed, replaced by AI answers ("Ask Maps")Dec 2025Google's AI now answers customer questions using your profile, reviews, photos and website. Incomplete information leads to wrong answers about your business.
Reviews under nicknames allowedNov 2025Don't worry about unfamiliar reviewer names. Reply professionally to everyone.
Owner replies checked before publishing2025Keep replies polite and specific. Avoid links and phone numbers in replies.
Schedule posts in advance2025Plan a month of posts in one sitting.
Social media links on your profile2025Link your Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn.
Service areas limited to about 2 hours' drive2025Home-service businesses: list realistic areas, not "all of Tamil Nadu".
Google writes AI summaries of your business2025–26Google describes you based on your data, which is one more reason to keep everything accurate.

The future is already here

Your customers are starting to ask questions differently. Instead of "salon near me", some now ask "Which salon in Porur is good for bridal makeup and open on Sunday?" Questions like that increasingly get an AI-written answer rather than a simple list.

For the first time, the 2026 study scored every factor for AI visibility. The finding: 3 of the top 5 AI visibility factors are about being mentioned on other trusted websites. In AI search, being talked about elsewhere is the new word-of-mouth.

  • Be listed, with complete and identical details, where Indian customers and AI tools look: JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART (B2B), Practo or Lybrate (doctors), Zomato and Swiggy (restaurants), Urban Company (home services), plus Bing Places (which feeds ChatGPT's search) and Apple Business Connect (Siri and Apple Maps for iPhone users).
  • Get onto "best of" lists like "Top 10 dentists in Chennai" articles. Many will add you if you simply ask.
  • Collect reviews beyond Google on the platforms your industry uses.
  • Add a testimonials page to your website and link it in the main menu.
  • Write clearly: short paragraphs, real questions and direct answers. AI tools, like busy customers, skip fluff.
Try this right now: Ask ChatGPT and Gemini "best [your service] in [your area]". Look at which businesses and websites they mention. Those are the platforms where you need to be listed properly.

Save your time and money

Myths vs truth: what NOT to waste effort on

A lot of "GMB tips" sold to business owners are outdated or never worked. Here's what the 2026 data says:

Myth"Add location tags (geotags) to your photos to rank higher."
TruthGeotagged photos came dead last, #187 of 187 factors. Upload good, real photos instead.
Myth"Post on GMB every day to rank."
TruthPost frequency ranked #148. Posts help customers decide, but won't save a weak profile. Once a week is plenty.
Myth"Stuff keywords into your business description."
TruthKeywords in the description ranked #171, and stuffing it is now flagged as a suspension risk.
Myth"Running Google Ads improves your Maps ranking."
TruthRanked #185. Ads buy you the ad slots, not the free Map Pack positions.
Myth"More Instagram followers improve your Google ranking."
TruthFollower count ranked #186. Social media builds your brand, not your Maps position directly.
A simple test for any agency or freelancer: if their main GMB plan is daily posts, geotagged photos and keyword-filled descriptions, they're working from an old playbook.

Protect what you've built

What can get your profile suspended or pushed down

A suspended profile disappears from Google, and getting it back can take weeks. The 2026 study added several new red flags. Avoid these:

  • Extra keywords in your business name, description or posts.
  • AI-written text pasted straight onto your profile, and AI-generated photos or videos. Use AI to draft if you like, then rewrite it in your own words and use real photos.
  • Showing an address when customers don't actually visit you (for example, a home-visit-only service).
  • Service areas more than about 2 hours' drive away, or overlapping areas across your branches.
  • Website links that redirect to a different website.
  • Changing your address without proper re-verification. Rankings can collapse or snap back to the old location.
  • Fake reviews, paid reviews, or multiple listings for the same business.

Your roadmap

The 30-day GMB ranking plan

Week 1: Fix the foundation

Goal: make sure Google understands exactly who you are and where you are.

  • Confirm you (not an ex-employee or an old agency) have Owner access to your profile.
  • Fix your primary and secondary categories after checking your top 3 competitors.
  • Correct your business name, map pin, phone, website link and hours.
  • Get a baseline geo-grid ranking report for your 3–5 most important searches.

Week 2: Complete every section

Goal: give Google and customers everything they need to choose you.

  • Fill in all services, with descriptions.
  • Add WhatsApp, booking link, attributes, opening date and social profiles.
  • Upload 15–20 real photos and 2–3 short videos.
  • Write a natural, human description, not a keyword list.

Week 3: Back it up everywhere else

Goal: make the rest of the internet agree with your Google profile.

  • Match your name, address and phone on your website exactly to Google.
  • Update your main page title and heading with service + area, and ask your developer to add LocalBusiness schema.
  • Create or improve one page for each main service.
  • Claim and complete JustDial, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and your industry's top 2 directories.

Week 4: Switch on the review engine

Goal: build a steady flow that keeps you looking active.

  • Put up the review QR and set up a WhatsApp review message for every customer.
  • Aim for 3–5 genuine reviews every week rather than a one-time push.
  • Reply to every old and new review.
  • Schedule a month of weekly posts, then re-run your geo-grid report and compare.

What to expect: profile fixes (category, services, hours, pin) usually show movement within about 2–6 weeks. Reviews, listings and links build up over 3–6 months. In crowded Chennai categories like dental, dermatology and salons, consistency beats clever tricks every time.

Frequently asked questions

What's the single most important thing for ranking on Google Maps?

Your primary category. It ranked #1 in the 2026 study, ahead of distance and your business name.

Why do I rank well from my shop but not from my customer's area?

Distance is the #2 factor, so Google always favours businesses near the person searching. A geo-grid report shows your real visibility across your area, and area-specific pages on your website help you reach beyond it.

Why does my ranking drop at night?

Being open at the time of search is now a top-5 factor. When you close, Google tends to show open competitors above you.

How many reviews do I need?

There's no magic number. Aim to beat the top 3 in your area on recent reviews. A steady few every week matters more than a big total.

Should I reply to negative reviews?

Yes, always, calmly and specifically. Future customers read your replies to judge how you treat people when something goes wrong.

Do I need a website to rank?

You can rank without one, but several top-25 factors depend on the website your profile links to. A simple, well-structured site gives you a real advantage.

Can I rank in areas where I don't have a shop?

On Maps, distance limits you. Use area-specific pages on your website to rank in regular Google search for nearby areas. Never create fake addresses or virtual-office listings.
